Who we are and where we are located

When you have diabetes there are so many things that you can do to control your diabetes and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. In fact, these lifestyle changes can help you prevent many of the complications that can come with diabetes.

The caring professionals at Helwig Health and Diabetes Center are devoted to helping you learn diabetes self management. U.S. News & World Report named Lehigh Valley Hospital among the nation’s best for endocrinology, which includes diabetes care. Helwig Health and Diabetes Center is highly respected, serving the Lehigh Valley population for nearly 20 years.

Locations/Directions

We've moved out main office to:
Cedar Crest Professional Park
1251 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Suite 212A, Allentown, Pa.
across the street from Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest

Our larger facility features a comfortable waiting area, and private classrooms and offices. At this location, we’re providing individual and small group education sessions. Patients in our insulin pump program primarily will be seen at the new location. Patients in our Diabetes in Pregnancy Program will be seen in our new location, as well as at 1259 S. Cedar Crest, Suite 323, in collaboration with LVPG endocrinology. To provide you with convenience and flexibility, we will continue to offer many of our classes at other facilities throughout the community.
Directions: From both east and west on I-78, take the Cedar Crest Blvd. South exit.

Lehigh Valley Hospital 17th & Chew
Suite 403, Allentown, Pa 18103
Directions: From Rte. 22, take the 15th St. exit. Take 15th St. south to Chew St., turn right onto Chew St. Patient parking is on the left side immediately after crossing 17th St. In the hospital, take the blue elevator to the fourth floor, Suite 403.

Lehigh Valley Hospital— Muhlenberg
2545 Schoenersville Rd., Bethlehem, PA 18017
Directions: From Rte. 22, take the Schoenersville Rd. exit. Turn left onto Schoenersville Rd. At the second light (Westgate Dr.) turn right. Directions to Helwig offices are available at the information desk (by the gift shop).

The Health Center at Trexlertown
6900 Hamilton Blvd. (Trexler Mall)Trexlertown, PA 18087
Directions: Trexler Mall is on Rte. 222 (Hamilton Blvd.) approximately five miles south of the I-78 exit. The Health Center is on the far left side of the mall.

About Our Classes

Our classes are small and provide valuable opportunities to get to know others who are managing diabetes. The classes are conducted by dietitians and nurse educators who are certified as diabetes educators and insulin pump trainers. The Helwig Health and Diabetes Center program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association.

To Enroll

Please ask your physician for a referral. After we have received the referral from your physician, we will contact you to schedule your first session. We offer convenient weekday hours, as well as late afternoon and evening programs. When you come to your first class, please bring your blood glucose monitor, blood sugar records and supplies.

Program Fees

Fees vary according to the type of services rendered. Family members or those who share in your care are encouraged to come with you to the sessions at no extra charge. Please ask our staff for current fees. The Lehigh Valley Hospital billing office will bill for services. Questions about bills should be made to the hospital billing office.

Insurance Information

Insurance coverage for diabetes education varies, but most companies recognize the value of diabetes education. Please contact your insurance provider or benefits administrator for specific information. Managed care plans require pre-authorization referrals from your physician to the insurance company. Ask your primary physician’s office staff which referrals your plan requires.

Access to care is not denied due to inability to pay for services.
